Ironic Twist seeking irony, because sarcasm clashes with my outfit

Thursday, January 19, 2006 :::

I may or may not have strep throat (the test results aren't coming back until Monday), and since I may or may not be highly contagious right now, I'm not going to make it to the DCist happy hour tonight. I don't think I would have much fun anyway, seeing as I can't really talk. The mighty DCeiver is taking over my DJing duties this evening, while I watch Marissa's naughty schoolgirl sister return to The O.C. For real this time, not like last week, when I thought she was coming back, but it was really just a lame episode about getting Marissa to come back to private school. I can't handle strep throat and another lame episode of The O.C. Speaking of television, on 24 this week, I learned that I have the same cell phone as Jack Bauer, so if I were to be trapped in a hijacked airport, I could totally blow up a terrorist's vest.

An event I forgot to mention in yesterday's post: Backroads. It's taking place at Wonderland Ballroom tonight. If you enjoy the company of gay men and country music, you should go. Gay cowboys, etc.

DCist happy hour update: I am DJing. It's taking place tomorrow at Cue Bar, 6-9 p.m., although we might continue spinning after that.

If you're planning on going to the Five Four show on Friday, note that they're going on first, probably around 9:30, followed by Dirty on Purpose and then Say Hi To Your Mom.

Sunday night, Aberdeen City are back in D.C., playing at the Warehouse Next Door with ADHD and Criteria. Doors are listed as 8:30, and I have word that Aberdeen City are going on around 10:00.

Although the week has had a slow start, giving me plenty of time to go to the gym, watch 24 and hate myself for caring about the season premiere of American Idol, there's a lot going on Thursday and Friday.

Thursday: DCist happy hour at Cue Bar. I might be one of the DJs, but I'm not 100%. I'll post an update if I am.

Friday: Five Four play at the Warehouse Next Door with Say Hi To Your Mom and Dirty on Purpose. I wasn't into Say Hi To Your Mom when I saw them open for Nada Surf, but maybe they're better in a smaller space. I like the Dirty on Purpose EP, even if some of it is a bit too twee for my taste.

Dirty on Purpose - "Mind Blindness" (MP3)
Dirty on Purpose - "Light Pollution" (rough demo MP3)

Also on Friday, Oops!... I Did It Again, a 2000s dance party. DJs Will Eastman (Bliss) and Sad (SALT) promise to play "your favorite hits of the millennium." It's a benefit for Project Create, a free after-school arts program for D.C. kids. It's $6 on the Black Cat backstage.

I've posted some photo highlights from Saturday night's bluestate anniversary party here, so check 'em out. Like I said over on the bluestate blog, balloons + birthday party hats + a room full of dancing people is the best birthday present we could have gotten. Thank you to all of our friends for supporting us throughout the year, and thank you to everyone who doesn't know us but comes to hear us spin anyway. Many special thanks to Jeff and Megan for the surprise balloons and party hats. I had my back to the dance floor while ordering a drink, and when I turned back around, there were balloons flying over the crowd, and I was very confused, and then I noticed that people were putting on birthday party hats, and I realized what was going on and I almost melted from happiness and loving my wonderful friends. Having all four DJs together for the first time in many months made it even more special. It was a pretty crazy night over the course of which I lost a ring, an earring and a parasol. Yup, a parasol (thank you again, Will and Liz!). I ended up finding the earring and parasol, but the ring has been sacrificed to the Black Cat gods, I'm afraid.

Overall, a great weekend with a little bit of relaxing and a lot of dancing, since Friday night I went out to the Beatles & Stones dance party. Even though it got some negative press in the days prior, the party was a huge success, and they had to stop letting people in shortly after BV, WeirdCurves and I left. I was very happy for DJ Deejay, and pleased with myself because I'd helped promote the event, although I suppose a concept like that sort of sells itself, huh? Between going out Friday night and DJing Saturday night, and knowing that I had work on Monday while everyone else has the day off, by Sunday I was in no shape for more dancing and drinking, so I never made it to Taint, which I'd really wanted to do. Instead, I spent the evening watching some very intense 24 with BV and WeirdCurves and coming home and falling asleep. I'm not going to say anything about 24 in case anyone reading this hasn't watched their TiVo-ed/taped/downloaded episodes yet, but holy crap, those were some insane two hours.

Regular, non-gushing programming will resume shortly.
